Spring Mulch Tips

April 5, 2023

Spring is here!

I am excited to see the sun shining! I pulled out my lawn chairs, put on my capris pants and decided to show a little more ankle this week! I’m ready for dinners made on my grill and more time outside with neighbors. How about you?

As I was sitting in the backyard a couple of things occurred to me. My suntan needs some work and so do my mulch beds! If your seasonal to do list looks a lot like mine, read on for a couple of Mrs. Maredith’s tips!

1.      You will want to start mulching right about now.

2.      Before you start, pull your weeds, don’t just cover them up!

3.      I recommend you edge your flower beds. If you have edged, this is going to help you keep your mulch where it’s supposed to be.

4.      If you are mulching around your trees, mulch from the trunk to the drip line, or at least 2 to 3 feet out. Mulch should not be in contact with the trunk of the tree and should never be piled up against the tree.

5.      Mulch should be spread 2-4 inches deep.

6.      Now, plant your favorite flowers.

7.      And mix my favorite spring mocktail to truly enjoy your yard!

Did you know that your HOA is going to be doing some spring cleanup work too. Perhaps you’ve already seen the trucks arriving with fresh mulch. I don’t know about you, but I love that smell! Your HOA has contracted with a landscaping company in most cases, to perform annual grounds maintenance in your community, on common areas. If you have any questions or concerns about this work, please contact your Community Manager for more information.
